IBM interview questions

IBM's fresher process in India is decided mostly by its online test. You take an aptitude section and a HackerRank coding test, which eliminates most candidates, and then an English communication test. The interview after that is usually short, and technical and HR questions are often covered in a single conversation. Experienced developers skip the English test but get a separate managerial round.

Roles covered: Associate System Engineer, Associate Developer and Associate Software Engineer for freshers; Applications Developer and SDE for experienced hires. We are not affiliated with IBM and this is not an official question bank. It describes what candidates consistently report, reviewed for the 2025–26 hiring cycle. Confirm the current process on the company’s own careers page before you apply.

The rounds
01

Online assessment

Aptitude followed by a HackerRank coding test. The number of problems varies by drive

Array, string and logic problems at about medium difficulty. Clearing this test is what gets you an interview.

02

English and communication test

A separate step for freshers. Some mass drives also add a group discussion

Spoken and written English. Practise speaking clearly about yourself and your project.

03

Technical interview

Often merged with HR into one short interview of about 25 to 30 minutes

Your resume project, OOP, DBMS and SQL, and the language you name as your strongest.

04

Managerial and HR (experienced hires)

Experienced developers report a managerial round before HR

How you work in a team, why you're moving, your notice period and relocation.

Technical round

Walk me through your project and the hardest problem you solved in it.

This comes up in nearly every IBM interview. Know your stack, your own part in it, and one thing you'd change.

Explain inheritance and polymorphism with an example.

Use an example from code you've written. A textbook definition with no example is the most common weak answer.

What's the difference between a primary key and a foreign key? Write a LEFT JOIN.

Explain each key in one sentence, then write the query on two small tables and say which rows come back with NULLs.

Solve an array or string problem on HackerRank, such as a pattern or counting problem.

Passing some of the hidden test cases can still move you forward, so submit a working version early and then improve it.

Explain call by value and call by reference in your language.

Answer for the language you claimed, with a two-line example. Experienced developers also get asked about immutability in Python.

HR round

Tell me about yourself.

Two minutes: your degree, your project, and one strength with proof. The interviewer is judging your communication here as well.

What are your strengths and weaknesses?

Give one real weakness and what you're doing about it. Avoid disguised strengths like working too hard.

Are you willing to relocate?

IBM hires into several cities. Answer honestly, and if you have a preference, say it without making it a condition.

Why do you want to join IBM?

Connect a specific IBM area, like its cloud, consulting or AI work, to something you've built or studied.

What candidates get wrong here
  • Prepare for the English test on its own. Freshers report it as a separate elimination step.
  • Treat the coding test as the main hurdle. The interview that follows is often short.
  • Keep one project you can explain in depth, because a short interview usually spends most of its time there.

Practise them, don’t only read them

Practise these against an AI interviewer that asks the follow-ups and scores your answer, including the HR questions on notice period and expected CTC. Or check your resume first with the free ATS score checker.
