Cognizant interview questions
Cognizant splits graduate hiring into tracks with sharply different bars. GenC is the volume track; GenC Next and GenC Pro require real programming ability and pay accordingly. Which track you are called for is decided by your assessment performance.
Roles covered: GenC, GenC Next and GenC Pro. We are not affiliated with Cognizant and this is not an official question bank. It describes what candidates consistently report, reviewed for the 2025–26 hiring cycle. Confirm the current process on the company’s own careers page before you apply.

What is the difference between DELETE, TRUNCATE and DROP?
Row-level and rollbackable, table-level and fast, and structural. Say which are DDL and which is DML, since that's usually the follow-up.
Explain inheritance and when you would prefer composition.
Being able to argue for composition rather than reciting inheritance is what distinguishes a strong answer here.
What is a stack and where is one used in a real system?
Definition, then function call stack, undo behaviour, or expression evaluation. The example is the part that lands.
Find the missing number in an array of 1 to n.
The sum formula in O(n) time and O(1) space, and be ready to explain the XOR alternative if pushed.
Are you flexible with shifts and locations?
Answer honestly. A yes you cannot honour becomes a problem in your first month.
What do you know about Cognizant?
Two or three real facts: scale, main service lines, a domain they're strong in. Not the tagline.
How do you handle pressure and tight deadlines?
One concrete example from a project or a fest, with what you actually did to make the deadline.
- Aim for the GenC Next or Pro track if you can code. The assessment is the only gate and the difference in package is substantial.
- DBMS questions are heavier here than at most peers. Joins, keys, normalisation and the DDL/DML distinction are all fair game.
