BYJU'S and edtech sales interview questions

Edtech hiring splits sharply between teaching roles and sales roles that carry teaching-adjacent titles. Candidates consistently report that Business Development Associate and Academic Counsellor positions are field or tele-sales jobs with revenue targets, and that the interview is built around a mock pitch. Read the role description carefully before preparing.

Roles covered: Business Development Associate, Academic Counsellor, and subject teaching roles. We are not affiliated with BYJU'S and this is not an official question bank. It describes what candidates consistently report, reviewed for the 2025–26 hiring cycle. Confirm the current process on the company’s own careers page before you apply.

The rounds
01

Screening call

Telephonic

Communication, relocation, comfort with a revenue target.

02

Group discussion

Group, topical

Clarity and persuasion under interruption.

03

Mock pitch

Role-play with an interviewer acting as a parent

Whether you probe before pitching, handle objections, and stop at the point of suitability. This is the decisive round.

04

HR round

One-on-one

Target structure, compensation split between fixed and variable, joining date.

Technical round

Sell this course to a parent who says it is too expensive.

Establish what outcome the parent wants before defending the price, then talk value against that outcome. Jumping straight to a discount is the common failure.

How would you explain a difficult concept to a student who has failed it twice?

Find where the understanding broke rather than repeating the explanation louder. This is asked for both teaching and counselling roles.

A parent asks whether the product will guarantee better marks. What do you say?

Do not promise an outcome you cannot control. Describe what the product does and what the student would need to do. Panels are testing whether you oversell.

How do you plan a week when you have a monthly revenue target?

Work backwards from the target through conversion rates to daily activity. Concrete arithmetic beats a statement about hard work.

HR round

Are you comfortable with a variable component in your salary?

Know the split before answering, and ask what the realistic on-target earning is. This is a fair and expected question to ask back.

This role involves field visits and calls, not classroom teaching. Is that what you want?

Answer honestly. Mismatch on exactly this point is the most common reason people leave these roles within months.

How do you handle rejection?

Something specific about how you reset and keep working the pipeline, ideally from prior sales or outreach experience.

What candidates get wrong here
  • Establish early whether the role is sales or teaching. The titles do not always make it obvious and the jobs are very different.
  • Prepare the mock pitch properly — practise probing questions before pitching, because that is what is being scored.
  • Ask for the fixed-versus-variable split and the on-target earning in writing before accepting.

Practise them, don’t only read them

Practise these against an AI interviewer that asks the follow-ups and scores your answer, including the HR questions on notice period and expected CTC. Or check your resume first with the free ATS score checker.
