HDFC Bank

HDFC Bank interview questions

HDFC hires for branch banking through a shorter, more conversational process than a public sector exam — usually an aptitude screen, then interviews with the branch and cluster leadership. The recurring theme candidates report is sales orientation: these are target-carrying roles and the interview establishes early whether you know that.

Roles covered: Relationship Manager, Personal Banker, and Deputy Manager roles across retail branches. We are not affiliated with HDFC Bank and this is not an official question bank. It describes what candidates consistently report, reviewed for the 2025–26 hiring cycle. Confirm the current process on the company’s own careers page before you apply.

The rounds
01

Aptitude and English screen

Online, short

Numerical reasoning, basic English, sometimes a situational judgement section.

02

Branch or hiring manager interview

One-on-one, 20–30 minutes

Product understanding, sales comfort, customer handling scenarios.

03

Cluster head or HR round

One-on-one

Target orientation, stability, relocation, compensation.

Technical round

How would you sell a savings account to someone who already has three?

Find the unmet need rather than pitching the product — salary credit, a specific transaction limit, a family account. Show you ask before you sell.

What is the difference between a debit card and a credit card, in customer terms?

Your money now versus the bank's money with a repayment window. The point is explaining it without jargon to someone who genuinely does not know.

A customer wants a loan they clearly cannot service. What do you do?

Decline the amount, not the customer — offer what the income supports and explain the appraisal honestly. Panels are testing whether you sell past the point of suitability.

What is KYC and why can it not be waived for a good customer?

A regulatory obligation, not an internal policy. Being crisp that it is non-negotiable is the answer.

HR round

Are you comfortable carrying a sales target?

Say yes only if you mean it, and back it with any prior target-carrying experience. This role is measured monthly and mismatched expectations end quickly.

How would you handle a month where you are well behind target?

A concrete plan — reviewing the pipeline, reworking existing customers, asking for help early — rather than a statement about working hard.

Why private sector banking?

Pace and growth are fair answers. Tie them to something you want to do rather than something you want to avoid.

What candidates get wrong here
  • Know the bank's flagship retail products by name before the interview. Candidates who cannot name them read as uninterested.
  • Have one story about persuading a reluctant person. It does not have to be a sale.
  • Be straight about relocation and target comfort. Both come up, and both create problems later if fudged.

Practise them, don’t only read them
