TCS NQT interview questions

The TCS National Qualifier Test is the single largest graduate hiring funnel in India. It's a scored test first and an interview second. Most candidates are filtered before anyone speaks to them, and the band you land in (Ninja, Digital, Prime) is decided largely by the test rather than the interview.

Roles covered: Ninja and Digital (and Prime, for the top scorers). We are not affiliated with TCS and this is not an official question bank. It describes what candidates consistently report, reviewed for the 2025–26 hiring cycle. Confirm the current process on the company’s own careers page before you apply.

The rounds
01

NQT: aptitude and reasoning

Timed, sectional, usually with per-section cutoffs

Numerical ability, reasoning, verbal ability. Speed matters as much as accuracy.

02

NQT: programming

Coding questions in a language of your choice

Loops, strings, arrays, basic data structures. Working code beats elegant code.

03

Technical interview

One-on-one, 20–40 minutes

Your final-year project, your primary language, DBMS and OOP fundamentals.

04

Managerial and HR

Sometimes combined into one round

Relocation, service agreement, why TCS, stability.

Technical round

Explain your final-year project end to end.

Problem, your specific contribution, the stack, one thing that went wrong and how you fixed it. Interviewers probe the part you sound least confident about, so know the piece you didn't personally build well enough to describe it anyway.

What is the difference between an array and a linked list?

Contiguous versus linked memory, O(1) indexed access versus O(n) traversal, insertion cost at the head. Give one situation where you would pick each.

Explain the four pillars of OOP with an example from your own code.

Definitions are the easy half. The example from your project is what separates a memorised answer from an understood one.

What are joins in SQL? Write a query using one.

Inner versus left join, and a query you can actually write on paper. Practise writing SQL by hand. A lot of candidates can explain joins and still can't produce one under pressure.

What is normalisation, and up to which normal form would you go in practice?

1NF through 3NF with what each removes, and an honest note that production schemas often stop at 3NF and denormalise for read performance.

HR round

Why TCS?

Something specific: scale of projects, the training pipeline, a domain you want exposure to. "It's a reputed company" is the answer everyone gives, and it registers as no answer at all.

Are you comfortable relocating anywhere in India?

This is a screening question with a right answer for a service company, and saying yes when you mean no creates a problem later. Be honest, and if you have a genuine constraint, name it once with the reason.

Are you willing to sign the service agreement?

Know the current bond terms before the interview so you are agreeing to something you have actually read.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Tie it to a track that exists inside the company. An answer implying you will leave for higher studies or a startup in two years works against you here.

What candidates get wrong here
  • Sectional cutoffs mean a brilliant score in one section will not rescue a weak one. Spend your practice time on whichever section you are weakest in.
  • The band matters more than the offer. Preparing for the Digital or Prime paper rather than the base one changes your starting package materially.
  • Keep a printed copy of your project explanation and practise it aloud until it fits in ninety seconds.

Practise them, don’t only read them

Practise these against an AI interviewer that asks the follow-ups and scores your answer, including the HR questions on notice period and expected CTC. Or check your resume first with the free ATS score checker.
