SBI PO interview questions
SBI runs its own PO exam rather than using the IBPS score, and its Mains is generally considered the harder paper. The distinguishing stage is the Group Exercise and Interview: SBI weights that phase more heavily than most, so candidates who prepare only for the written paper are routinely surprised.
Roles covered: Probationary Officer at the State Bank of India. We are not affiliated with SBI and this is not an official question bank. It describes what candidates consistently report, reviewed for the 2025–26 hiring cycle. Confirm the current process on the company’s own careers page before you apply.
Prelims
Online, 100 marks, 60 minutes
English, Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning. Qualifying only.
Mains
Objective plus a descriptive paper (letter and essay)
Reasoning and Computer Aptitude, Data Analysis and Interpretation, General/Economy/Banking Awareness, English. The DI section is notably harder than its IBPS equivalent.
Psychometric test
Online, ahead of the interview phase
Feeds into the panel's view rather than producing a score of its own.
Group Exercise and Interview
Group discussion or activity, followed by a personal interview
How you argue in a group without dominating it, plus banking awareness and motivation. This phase carries real weight in the final merit list.
What is financial inclusion and what has SBI done about it?
Define it, then name concrete instruments — Jan Dhan accounts, business correspondents, rural branch reach. A candidate who can connect policy to delivery stands out.
Explain the difference between a bank's CASA and term deposits.
Current and savings balances are low-cost and volatile; term deposits are costlier and stickier. Say why a high CASA ratio matters to a bank's margin.
What is digital banking's biggest risk from a bank's point of view?
Fraud and operational resilience, not competition. Referencing a real safeguard — two-factor authentication, transaction limits, cooling periods — is stronger than a generic answer.
How would you explain a home loan EMI to a first-time customer?
Plain language, no jargon, principal and interest split, and what changes if the rate moves. This tests customer communication as much as knowledge.
Why SBI specifically?
Scale and reach are the honest answers, but make them concrete — a specific role in rural credit, or the breadth of exposure a PO gets across such a large branch network.
In the group exercise, how would you handle someone talking over everyone?
Bring them in rather than compete with them. Panels are watching whether you can make the group work, not whether you can win it.
What would you do if a customer became abusive at your counter?
De-escalate, stay procedural, involve the branch manager. Show you separate the person from the process.
- The Mains DI section is where most candidates lose the paper. Practise it under a clock rather than untimed.
- Prepare for the group exercise deliberately — it is the stage most candidates neglect and it carries real weight.
- The descriptive paper rewards a clean, conventional letter format. Learn one structure and use it.
