Sales & Business Development

Sales and business development mock interview, round by round

Sales interviews are the one vertical where the interview is a sample of the job. The panel is watching how you handle a question you did not want, because that is what a customer will do to you on Tuesday. Expect a roleplay round rather than a written test.

Roles covered: Business development executive, Area sales manager, Key account manager.

What the panel is really testing
  • Whether your numbers are yours: quota, attainment, deal size, cycle length, and the base they are measured from
  • How you handle an objection when the person in front of you is not being reasonable
  • Whether you can explain a product you have never sold after five minutes of briefing
The rounds a sales and business development drive runs

Start an interview drive in this field and the AI runs these rounds back to back, scoring each one before the next opens. The sequence differs by field, which is why a sales drive includes a client roleplay and a manufacturing drive does not.

Questions you should expect

Sell me this product.

Ask questions before you pitch. Two or three about the buyer's situation, then a pitch built from their answers. Candidates who launch straight into features fail this round, and it is the most common way it is failed.

Tell me about a deal you lost.

Pick a real one, say what you misread, and say what you changed afterwards. A candidate with no lost deals has either not sold much or is not being straight, and the panel knows both.

What was your target last year, and what did you close?

Give the number, the attainment, and the context: territory, product, cycle length, and whether the target moved mid-year. Percentages with no base attached invite exactly the follow-up you do not want.

What candidates get wrong here
  • Bring your numbers written down and be ready to be questioned on them. Rounded, unverifiable figures read as invented.
  • The roleplay round is scored on discovery questions, not on enthusiasm.
  • If you are moving from field sales to inside sales or the reverse, say why in one sentence before they ask.
