Retail & E-commerce

Retail and e-commerce mock interview, round by round

Retail interviews are held between the shelves as often as in an office, and they are about throughput: footfall, conversion, shrinkage and staffing. E-commerce roles ask the same questions with a dashboard instead of a store.

Roles covered: Store manager, Category manager, Retail sales executive.

What the panel is really testing
  • Whether you know your store's numbers or only its stories
  • Handling a customer complaint in front of other customers
  • Rostering and shrinkage, which is where store managers are really tested
The rounds a retail and e-commerce drive runs

Start an interview drive in this field and the AI runs these rounds back to back, scoring each one before the next opens. The sequence differs by field, which is why a sales drive includes a client roleplay and a manufacturing drive does not.

Questions you should expect

Footfall is flat but conversion has dropped. What do you check?

Staffing at peak hours, stock availability in the top categories, display changes, and whether a promotion ended. Work in that order and say what data you would pull for each.

How do you handle a customer demanding a return outside policy, loudly?

Move the conversation away from the floor, restate the policy once in plain language, and offer the exchange or credit you are authorised to give. Say when you would escalate rather than bend, because inconsistency across customers is what management fears.

How do you control shrinkage?

Cycle counts, receiving discipline, camera coverage at the known blind spots, and staff rotation. Give a number you moved if you have one, since this is the metric that decides retail promotions.

What candidates get wrong here
  • Bring store numbers: average bill value, conversion, category mix, and attrition in your team.
  • Expect a question about festive season staffing. It is the operational peak that defines the Indian retail year.
  • For an e-commerce role, be ready to translate the same instincts into dashboards and SLAs.
