Resume Format for Job Applications (2026 Guide)
Most job seekers in India need one of three formats: reverse-chronological, functional or combination. For almost every application, reverse-chronological is the safe choice. It's what recruiters expect and what applicant tracking systems parse best. The real work is tailoring it for each posting you apply to.
Build this format from your own details and download it as a Word (DOCX) or PDF file, free. Start with your resume.

Choose reverse-chronological unless you have a strong reason
List your latest role first and work backwards. Recruiters look for your current title, company and responsibilities in the first few seconds. Use a combination format only if you're switching careers and your skills matter more than your job history.
Keep it to one page if you have under three years of experience
Freshers and early-career candidates rarely need a second page. Experienced professionals can go to two pages. A longer resume usually means you're listing duties when you should be choosing your best results.
Tailor your summary and skills for each job
Keep one master resume with everything in it. For each application, rewrite the two-line summary around the role and reorder your skills so the posting's top requirements come first. It takes about ten minutes and raises your match score more than changing the template does.
Write bullets that show your results
Start each bullet with an action verb and end it with a number where you can: time saved, revenue, tickets closed, users served. 'Resolved 60+ customer queries a day with a 92% satisfaction score' tells the recruiter how well you did the job.
Leave out personal details the recruiter doesn't need
Date of birth, father's name, marital status, religion and a photo aren't required for most private-sector jobs in India. Leave them out unless the employer asks. Government and PSU applications usually have their own form, so follow that instead.
Name the file so the recruiter can find it
Save it as Firstname-Lastname-Role.pdf. A file called resume_final_v3.docx gets lost in a downloads folder, and some portals show the file name to the recruiter.

Score my resume freeWhich resume format is best for a job in India?
Reverse-chronological, for most candidates. It puts your latest role first, which is what recruiters and applicant tracking systems both expect.
Should I put a photo on my resume?
Not for most private-sector jobs. Add one only when the employer or the job posting asks for it.
Do I need a different resume for every job?
Keep the same resume and adjust it. Change the summary and the order of your skills for each posting, and leave the rest as it is.
